03 Good to know

What to know before studying in Germany

  1. 01

    Tuition fees

Public universities usually only charge a semester contribution. Some federal states and private universities charge fees for non-EU students.

  2. 02

    Language

German-taught programmes usually require German at B2 to C1 level (e.g. TestDaF or DSH). Many master's programmes are also taught in English.

  3. 03

    Proof of funds

For the visa you must prove that your living costs are covered – usually via a blocked account (Sperrkonto). The amount is set every year.

  4. 04

    Studienkolleg

If your school certificate does not give direct university access, the path often leads through a Studienkolleg followed by an assessment exam.

04 FAQ

Questions about studying in Germany

Is studying in Germany free?

At most public universities you pay no tuition fees, only a semester contribution. There are exceptions in some federal states and at private universities. Living costs come on top.

Can I study in Germany directly with a baccalauréat from Côte d'Ivoire or Senegal?

That depends on your certificate and the programme. Often a Studienkolleg or one or two successfully completed years of study in your home country are required first. We check your documents and show you the right path.

Do I need to speak German?

For German-taught programmes, yes – usually at B2 to C1 level. For English-taught programmes good English is enough, but German makes everyday life and job hunting much easier.

How long does the visa process take?

Processing times vary by embassy and can range from several weeks to months, so plan early. We help you submit a complete application – the decision lies solely with the embassy.

Can I work while studying?

Yes, international students may work within limits set by law. We explain the current rules to you.
